Introduction to Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a medicine that began in China and has been practiced for over 3,000 years. Acupuncture is just one part of a complex system that comprises Asian medicine. The basic concept behind Asian medicine is that the body is constantly trying to maintain a state of homeostasis or balance. When a person's body is thrown too far out of balance, illness and injury occur.
Asian medicine is comprised of many different modalities. These different techniques are administered for the common goal of guiding the body back to a state of equilibrium.
Components of Asian Medicine
- Acupuncture- the use of fine, single-use needles strategically placed throughout the body along meridians, or energy pathways
- Herbology-herbal supplementation using whole herbs either dried and made into a tea or in the form of capsules and pills
- Cupping-suction cups placed on the body to relieve pain and detoxify
- Gua Sha-scraping different areas with a thin piece of horn to expel illness, detoxify and relieve pain
- Moxibustion-heat placed over a specific area either in the form of an herb that is lit on fire and let smoke or via a heat lamp, creating increased circulation and healing
- Acupressure-the use of the fingers to lightly stimulate acupuncture points to balance the body
- Shiatsu-a form of Asian massage that depresses and releases acupuncture points along the energy pathways and stimulates the entire energetic system
- Qi Gong and Tai Chi-calming meditative practices that help the body regain health, using slow, deliberate movements
- Tui Na-joint manipulation to increase mobility
Acupuncture is a safe, painless alternative for treating:
- Arthritis, fibromyalgia, back pain and carpal tunnel
- Allergies, asthma and other respiratory problems
